Every Newbie wants to impress their colleagues with their advanced skill and speed at working.
This is quite unnecessary.
Let me explain to you why.
- EVERY pitch will be turned(1) without fail, until the last possible minute. If you are smart and choose to turn one set of comments per hour as opposed to two sets, you are cutting the number of comments you receive in half.
- The quicker you work, the more reliable you become for the ‘firedrills’ and the more work the associates will give you. Do not become the ‘go to guy’, this will only lead to a premature balding and obesity.
- Seniors are always suspicious by nature. If you finish your work quickly, they will assume there are mistakes and make you redo it. If you take a very long time to do it, they will assume you have been very thorough and that it is correct.
The lesson to be learned here is that procrastination can be your best friend in banking. Take time to surf the net, mindlessly alt-tab between spreadsheets or send out some spam to your friends. It will give you a much needed break and avoid much unneeded stress.
(1) Refers to making a round of comments on a draft of a pitch. Most pitches are turned for countless hours before being finalized.
